How to Bet Horse Racing
From straight Win wagers to exotic Trifecta boxes, discover how parimutuel betting works, how to decipher the Tote Board, and how odds translate into dividend payouts.
1. What is Parimutuel Wagering?
In casino games or sportsbooks, you bet against "the house." In thoroughbred racing, however, you betagainst fellow punters. The word parimutuel comes from French, meaning"mutual betting."
Every dollar wagered on a specific pool (Win, Place, Exacta) is gathered together into one total sum.
As more bettors wager on a horse, that runner's odds decrease. If a horse receives little money, their odds soar.
When the race goes Official, the net pool is divided equally per winning dollar among holding ticket owners.
2. Bet Types Explained
Straight Wagers (Easiest to Hit)
The classic racetrack wager. If your horse wins, you collect the full win dividend. Highest payout among straight bets.
You cash if your horse finishes either first or second. A terrific wager when you believe a horse will run well but may get caught at the wire.
Three chances to win! If your horse hits the board anywhere in the top three, you collect. Lowest risk, modest payout.
Exotic Wagers (Big Dividends)
Pick the first two horses across the wire in exact sequence (e.g. #3 to win, #7 to place).
The crown jewel of single-race exotics. Pick the top three finishers in exact sequence. Trifecta payoffs routinely reach hundreds or thousands of dollars.
